Hoe lang kun je honing bewaren?

How long can you keep honey?

Honey: nature's liquid gold. Delicious in tea, on a sandwich, or in homemade dressing. But what about the shelf life of honey? Can that jar from the pantry three years ago still be used?

Unlimited shelf life – really?

In principle, any type of honey has an unlimited shelf life . This is due to its unique composition: honey contains almost no water, has a low pH, and is full of natural sugars. This makes it a hostile environment for bacteria and fungi. Jars of honey have even been found in Egyptian tombs that were still edible after thousands of years!

Then why is there an expiration date on it?

Good question. Although honey doesn't spoil, legislation requires that food products have an expiration date . This is often "best before" (best before), which essentially means the quality is at its best before that date. After that date, you can still use the honey, as long as it's stored properly.

Crystallization: harmless and completely normal

Over time, honey will crystallize . It will then thicken and sometimes develop a grainy texture. This may look less appealing, but it's completely natural . The flavor and nutritional value are retained. If you want to liquefy the honey, briefly place the jar in a bowl of warm (not boiling!) water.

How to best store honey

To keep your honey fresh for as long as possible, it's important to store it tightly sealed , at room temperature , and in a dark place . Think of a kitchen cupboard, cellar, or pantry. Avoid damp areas or exposure to sunlight, as this can affect the quality.

In short: honey essentially never spoils. As long as you store it properly, you can enjoy it for years. So, that old jar of honey in the back of the cupboard? Just open it and use it!
